What comes after Social Media?

170420101477SILICON VALLEY – Year 2003 things were heating up again in the valley after the dot com crisis and 2001 WTC twin tower catastrophe.

Web 2.0 and social media made Internet services fashionable again, pulling back entrepreneurs who thrived or merely survived in the first rounds of activities on the Internet that began two decades ago.

New companies emerged from nowhere. Blogs became popular. We got wiki and microblogs. Flickr, YouTube, MySpace, Skype and a myriad of other social media services emerged.

Google and Apple are now the most glowing examples of post-dot-com-crisis. Both companies have positioned themselves for future growth. But they are also becoming competitors.

Millions of people around the world learned to use Facebook and Twitter. Nokia is still the world’s biggest mobile phones producer and supplier but it’s not the leader in usability. Google launched Buzz this year.

It’s interesting to see how fast the competitors are countering the successful launching of iPad. Nobody has been able to deliver a iPhone killer? Is it going to take three to five years before we see the first iPad killers as well?

The innovation train on the small screen

E71_24.10.2009_Sotkamo 059The small screen is another way of seeing the reality.  Nokia was the leader of mobile technology for a long time, but things have changed.

It might take a year or more for Nokia to run through the circle of confusion and find the way to mobile mastering.

Nokia is still a big player and if the historical black box delivers the simple mechanism for future innovation and prosperity then we’ll see Nokia as a major performer ten years from now.

But the world has changed fast since the introduction of iPhone. That was a disruptive innovation and the small singular moment of change has already happened. The observed moment of change is already here.

What will be the next big thing?

IPTV up and traditional TV down

There has been a national discussion about the future of television in Finland. The CEO of YLE (The Finnish Broadcasting Company), a former Microsoft Finland director said in a controversial speach to the Swedish language daily Huvudstadblade that it's possible that the traditional television is history in ten years time.

I'd like to know more abot this presentation at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Fransisco. Is there a webcast or podcast about the internet video revolution somewhere? Need to do some digging.

Rocketboom

Rocketboom is a three minute daily videoblog based in New York City. Rocketboog covers and creates a wide range of information and commentary from top news stories to quirky internet culture.

Their agenda includes releasing each new clip at 9 am EST, Monday through Friday. With a heavy emphasis on international arts, technology and weblog drama, Rocketboom is presented via online video and widely distributed through RSS. Did you know? Tip: When watching videos in the iTunes album pane, you can click the video to scale.

I've been watching Rocketboom since a few years back in time. The announcer has changed.
